Staying At Trinity

What Trinity provides

Included in the cost of all our programs:

• breakfast, lunch and dinner
• all transport during the scheduled program
• airport transfers to and from Trinity College for students arriving and departing on flights at Melbourne Tullamarine Airport
• all materials required for the course
• all linen including sheets, blankets, a pillow and towels (one change of linen will be provided for two-week program)
• laundries with washing machines, dryers, irons and washing powder
• WiFi access

Accommodation

Students reside at Trinity College for the duration of YLP. This is a condition of enrolment and is included in the course fee. All students stay in a Trinity College dorm room, sharing with one other student of the same gender and, where possible, the same age but from a different country. Males and females will be in separate buildings (where possible) or separate floors. On each floor there is a shared bathroom with toilets and showers and a laundry. Bedding, towels, blankets and laundry facilities are provided. In the evenings and on weekends, Trinity College has its own security guard to ensure the safety of students.

Meals

All meals are provided, including some outside Trinity College as part of excursions or the extracurricular program. Students with special dietary needs can be catered for and these requirements should be outlined in your application form.

Telephone and internet

Overseas students should be aware that roaming charges on mobile phones can be expensive. Phone cards are an inexpensive way to make calls overseas. Prepaid local SIM cards are another option. SIM starter kits and phone cards can be purchased from convenience stores and other outlets in Australia.

WiFi access is available on the Trinity College campus. On arrival, students will be issued a username and password.

Airport transfers

Please note, we DO NOT offer transfers from Avalon Airport. Students should organise flights in and out of Tullamarine Airport only.

Airport transfers will be organised for students flying to and from Melbourne Tullamarine Airport. These transfers are included in the fees. On arrival at Melbourne Tullamarine Airport, a Young Leaders mentor will meet students at the relevant arrivals hall (after clearing customs, where applicable). Students will be emailed clear arrival instructions a couple of days prior to their program start date. Students will then be escorted back to Trinity College to register.

Passports and visas

Students travelling from overseas should ensure they hold a valid passport. A visitor visa is normally required, and should be valid for the entire program. It is important that these documents are correct and are obtained as soon as possible. Any delay in applying may impact on your ability to attend YLP. Travel insurance

Travel insurance is not included in course fees. All international students must obtain suitable travel insurance for the duration of their stay in Australia to ensure they are covered for any medical expenses, cancellation fees and loss of luggage. Students will need to arrange travel insurance in their home country prior to arriving in Australia and provide details to the Young Leaders office. Australian students do not require travel insurance as they are covered under Medicare.

Immigration and customs regulations

Passengers on flights into Australia will be given an incoming passenger card that includes a customs declaration. Customs regulations are strict and you must declare if you are carrying any goods or items listed on the form, including food, plant material or animal products. If you are unsure about what you can or cannot bring into Australia, you are encouraged to contact your nearest Australian mission or the customs office.

Mentors

Mentors are all high-achieving University of Melbourne students who have been specifically trained to provide support and guidance throughout YLP, and they take a special interest in the students' overall adjustment during the program. Mentors are readily accessible and are actively involved in all aspects of the program.

Our mentors are carefully selected based on their ability to be a positive role model for YLP students. Mentors help run extracurricular activities, including trivia night, cultural night and karaoke night. These activities provide opportunities for students to get to know each other and help enrich the YLP learning experience. All students in the Young Leaders Program at Trinity are allocated to a mentor group with approximately 10 other students.

Student welfare

Staying at Trinity College is the first time living away from home for many students in the Young Leaders Program. Therefore, Trinity does all it can to ensure students feel personally supported and encouraged to participate in all that is on offer.

Trinity College is a secure facility, protected by 24-hour security personnel in addition to resident staff and student mentors.

All academic and extracurricular excursions are fully supervised by appropriately qualified staff. Trinity also actively encourages students to develop new friendships as well as care for each other as a community. Students who experience homesickness or issues of personal adjustment should initially seek assistance from their mentor. While it is rarely necessary, students may be referred to other Trinity support staff, including chaplains and counsellors.

Clothing requirements

Clothing should be comfortable. Students dress casually on campus – jeans, t-shirts, jumpers etc are standard dress items. Students will need sports gear for some activities and more formal dress for the valedictory dinner. Examples of formal wear include:

• suit, shirt, pants and tie
• cocktail/evening dress
• cultural/traditional uniform or dress
• smart casual attire.

The weather in Melbourne, in both summer and winter, can vary and change quickly, so you should plan to dress in layers that can be removed or added to, with a thicker jacket on hand if the weather turns cool. All enrolled students receive a list of recommended clothing items prior to their arrival at Trinity.
