Intensives

In this unit students will undertake an in-depth exegetical and theological study of selected New Testament texts featuring women and issues of authority. Students will also engage with women's authority and position in the period of the early church. Students will explore the socio-cultural, literary and theological contexts for these texts, in dialogue with contemporary feminist approaches. In addition, students will explore the current context of women's leadership and draw conclusions

The unit will be taught by The Revd Canon Dr Dorothy Lee.

This intensive is designed for both clergy and laity.

Study Australia’s only unit on Anglican church law and governance.

This five-day intensive course will be taught by bishops, diocesan chancellors and theologians including Archbishop Phillip Aspinall, Mr Garth Blake AM SC, Judge Elizabeth Brimer SC, Ms Rachel Ellyard, barrister, the Hon Keith Mason AC KC, Mr Michael Shand AM KC and Dr Robert Tong AM.

This unit can be taken for credit by students enrolled in University of Divinity courses, or it can be audited as a single unit (participation in all learning and access to all readings, but no assessment required).

Thursday 7 to Saturday 9 September 2023 – 2½ days at Trinity College, Melbourne

Thursday 9 to Saturday 11 November 2023 – 2½ days at St James’ Institute, Sydney

Note: in-person attendance on all dates is a requirement to complete the course.

Catering

Morning and afternoon tea will be provided.  Lunch is available in Melbourne in the College’s Hall, for which a small additional charge will be made.   Lunch is available in Sydney at a number of nearby cafes and coffee shops.  Participants may, of course, bring their own lunch with them.  Tea and coffee will be available all day.

This unit introduces students to the ministry of the Chaplain, providing a biblical, theological and pastoral underpinning for the ministry of chaplaincy. Students will explore the relationship between pastoral and spiritual care with attention to the variety of contexts in which chaplaincy ministry can be expressed. Students will learn the art of reflecting theologically on ministry practice outside of the church. Engagement with leading practitioners in a range of settings forms a critical part of this study. There will be lectures, tutorials, engagement with field specialists and group reflection. The unit will be taught by Dr Gary Heard. This intensive is designed for both clergy and laity.

This unit provides an in-depth study of the Gospel of Matthew. The primary focus is on the narrative shape and the core theological themes which make this Gospel unique. Attention will be paid to Matthew’s use of his sources, including the Old Testament Scriptures. It will also explore the issue of authorship and examine the community out of which the Gospel arose. The unit will consider the ways in which this Gospel addresses issues that are of continuing relevance for the life and mission of the church.

The unit will be taught by The Revd Canon Dr Bob Derrenbacker, Dean Trinity College Theological School.
