The work of visiting professor Justice Janak De Silva
Justice Janak De Silva, Judge of the Supreme Court of Sri Lanka, is staying at Trinity College and tells us a bit more about his work

What is your connection to the University of Melbourne and Trinity College?
On a previous occasion, I have attended a judicial training program conducted by the Faculty of Law for the Judges of the Superior Courts of Sri Lanka. I was greatly impressed with the diversity and strength of the faculty.
I have no previous connection to Trinity College, University of Melbourne. However, my primary, secondary and high school education was at Trinity College, Kandy, Sri Lanka.
What is the main purpose of your visit?
To interact with academia on areas of mutual interest in particular constitutional law and international trade law.
What got you interested in studying law?
I grew up in a legal environment, which instilled a deep desire to pursue a career in law.
What are the most rewarding and challenging aspects of your career?
The most rewarding part is the ability to dispense justice to society on diverse issues. The challenging aspect is to overcome the laws’ delays inherent in the legal system.
What is your favourite thing about Australia?
The warmth of the people and the willingness to assist in any way possible.
