Theological School Scholarships

Generous donors have enabled the Theological School to award scholarships and other financial assistance to students. This includes support for theological study, training for ordained ministry, and research degree candidature.

Moorhouse Doctoral Scholarships

At Trinity College, we are deeply committed to our Anglican heritage. In support of our vision to be globally recognised as a leading theological education and research institution, two scholarships for full-time PhD candidates will be awarded for our Theological School, commencing in 2020. These transformational scholarships include course fee remission and a living allowance.

The scholarships celebrate the vision, intellect and achievements of James Moorhouse, the second Bishop of Melbourne, who established the Theological School at Trinity in 1878.

Eligibility
To be eligible, candidates must:

  • meet the academic and admission requirements of the University of Divinity PhD program
  • plan to study full-time through the Trinity College Theological School
  • have their research topic approved by Trinity College
  • be an Australian citizen, permanent resident, or international student who can attain a valid student visa prior to commencement.

Fields of research
Applications are encouraged from scholars who wish to pursue doctoral research in any of the following fields:

  • New Testament and Christian Origins
  • Old Testament/Hebrew Bible
  • Modern Systematic Theology
  • Anglican Identity and Mission

Value and duration
Total value of up to $132,000AUD

  • 100% University of Divinity fee remission for three years of a full-time doctorate degree, currently valued at $51,000
  • three-year living allowance, valued at around $27,000 per year (total $81,000)

Special conditions

  • Scholarships cannot be deferred.
  • Scholarships cannot be taken up at other colleges of the University of Divinity. 
  • Students must successfully enrol at the University of Divinity following the usual PhD application process after discussing their proposed research topic with Trinity.
  • Prospective candidates may negotiate to commence in semester two of 2020 by contacting the Trinity College Theological School registrar at tcts@trinity.edu.au
  • Scholarship recipients must meet the University of Divinity’s expectations for academic progress, and the scholarship may be withdrawn if satisfactory progress or full-time enrolment is not maintained.

What next?

  • Prospective candidates should first contact the Dean of the Theological School at Trinity College to seek preliminary approval for their proposed research topic.
  • Once preliminary approval is granted, prospective candidates should fill out the relevant application forms, as provided by Trinity College. 
  • Short-listed applicants will be interviewed in person or by Skype. Scholarships will be confirmed by the end of November, subject to successful admission to the University of Divinity PhD program.
  • Trinity College reserves the right to not award the scholarships if there are no suitable candidates.

For commencement in Semester 1, 2020 (February):

  • International students - 30 June 2019. 

For commencement in Semester 2, 2020 (July):

  • Australian students - 31 March 2020
  • International students - 30 October 2019.

Residential (under 23) Scholarships

Three full residential scholarships will be awarded to students who wish to study a theology degree at Trinity College but don’t have the financial means to do so. This is a means-tested scholarship.  

Eligibility
To be eligible for this scholarship, you must:

  • be accepted to study at the University of Divinity and Trinity College Theological School in 2020
  • undertake your course as a full-time student
  • be under 23 years old and meet the criteria to live at Trinity’s Residential College
  • be an Australian citizen, permanent resident, or international student who can attain the necessary visas to study in Australia.

Scholarships are open to all international and Australian applicants, however, preference will be given to Australian citizens who are active members of the Anglican Church of Australia.

Criteria
Selection will be based on all-round talent and will take into account some or all of the following:

  • the talent you can bring to Trinity College
  • demonstrated involvement in your school and/or community
  • your financial situation.

Value and duration

Total value up to $136,000

  • fee remission for three-year University of Divinity degree ($38,000 for Bachelor of Theology or $44,000 for Master of Divinity in 2019)
  • three-year Residential College scholarship, valued at $30,700 per year (around $92,000 over three years) including accommodation, all meals and utilities, plus academic and pastoral care.

Special conditions

  • Scholarships cannot be deferred and only apply to residence at Trinity College.
  • Scholarship recipients are required to meet the University of Divinity’s expectation for academic progress.
  • Applicants should have the endorsement of their local bishop, diocese, vicar and/or parish.
  • Residential College scholarship holders are expected to maintain a high standard of achievement in the areas of endeavour for which the scholarship was awarded and contribute positively and enthusiastically to college and chapel life.

What next?
If you are a new student, who has already applied for admission to the University of Divinity through Trinity College Theological School, and you wish to apply for a residential scholarship to live on campus, there are two important steps to you must take.

Apply for admission to residence at Trinity College through the University of Melbourne website, ensuring that Trinity College is listed as your first and only preference.

Joan Adams Scholarships

The Joan Adams Scholarship allows outstanding students to study for degrees of the University of Divinity. Successful applicants will show potential to provide leadership at Trinity College and in the wider church during their studies and in their subsequent careers.

Up to three scholarships are available at any one time for theological studies at undergraduate, postgraduate or doctoral levels for awards of the University of Divinity. The total value of individual scholarships will usually be between $15,000 and $35,000 per year, depending on whether residential fees are included.

Scholarships are normally awarded for up to three years, subject to satisfactory progress and an annual review. It is expected that students will apply to use FEE-HELP to repay fees through the tax system, and that the scholarship will therefore not be used for the payment of course fees, but rather be used to support the recipient’s studies. (FEE-HELP is only available to Australian citizens.)

Eligibility

Applicants should be:

  • an active member of the Anglican Church of Australia, or a church in communion with the Anglican Church
  • enrolled in a formal course of study offered by the University of Divinity through Trinity College Theological School
  • undertaking a course, preferably as a full-time student
  • a resident in Melbourne during the term of the scholarship.

Criteria

  • Applicants should have a proven track record of solid academic achievement or evidence of their capacity to excel academically.
  • Priority is given to those proposing active ministry, lay or ordained, within the Anglican Church.

Value and duration

  • Total value of $15,000 to $35,000
  • Up to three years

Special conditions

  • The scholarship is subject to annual review, and poor results or a failure to live up to the agreed expectations may result in early termination of the scholarship.
  • Applicants are expected to provide leadership within Trinity College, including the academic and worshipping life of the Theological School, and in the life of the church.

  • A curriculum vitae showing relevant study, experience and publications (if any)
  • Copies of academic transcripts of previous study (new students only)
  • Names and contact details of three referees.

Studentships for Ordinands

These studentships assist in the training of candidates for ordained ministry. Funds are used to offset the cost of fees for the Formation Program and other non-university training undertaken at Trinity.

Eligibility
Applicants must be enrolled in the Formation Program.

Criteria
These funds each have separate criteria, as listed below. Please note which studentship you would like to apply for on your application form.

  • The Albury studentship for support of candidates from the Diocese of Wangaratta (many include stipend).
  • The Florinda Anderson studentship for the education of deserving students from the Diocese of Ballarat.
  • The Bishop’s, Payne, Rupertswood and Florence Stanbridge studentships for the promotion of learning amongst candidates for Holy Orders from the Diocese of Melbourne (preferably later-year students who have passed Greek).
  • The Nigel and Margery Herring studentship (2011) for a candidate for ordination with financial need.
  • The Kew (1878), Marley (1887) and Combedown (1898) studentships for candidates in the Diocese of Melbourne.
  • The Richard Grice (1879), Henty (1879), Moorhouse (1921) and Frank Woods (1977) studentships to train candidates for Holy Orders within any one of the dioceses in the Province of Victoria.
  • The Upton-Everest (1963), A.V. Green (1964), A.F. Tweedie (1964), Esmond Sutton (1980), Daisy Searby (1983), Sydney Smith (1986), Alfred Bird (1998) and John Liversidge (2012) studentships to assist the training of candidates for the Anglican Ministry.
  • The A.M. White studentship (1943) for 'protestant' candidates for admission to Holy Orders who are in financial need.
  • The Joseph Burke studentship (1993) for a student of theology.

Value and duration

The total value of studentships is approximately $2000 for one year.

Financial assistance scholarships

Thanks to the generous and far-sighted support of Trinity alumni, donors and friends, the Theological School can award several financial assistance scholarships, including the:

  • Rosemary Young Scholarship (for female students only)

Eligibility

  • Applicants must be enrolled to study at Trinity College Theological School.
  • Rosemary Young Scholarship applicants must be female.

Criteria

Applicants must be able to demonstrate financial need.

Value and duration

The total value of these scholarships varies, depending on financial need, and the duration is up to three years.

Klingner Scholarship (St Peter's Eastern Hill)

Founded in 1975, this scholarship supports members of the St Peter’s Guild of Servers or other suitable candidates in training for Holy Orders through Trinity College. 

Eligibility

Applicants must presently, or soon to be, training for the deaconate and priesthood at one of the approved colleges, including Trinity College Theological School.

Criteria

The recipient will be expected to connect with and contribute to St Peter’s Eastern Hill during the year, for example, by means of a placement.

Value and duration

Klingner Scholars are usually awarded $8,000 for one year with the right to reapply.
