A tribute to Diana Smith, by Dr Tamar Lewit, FSA (Lecturer in History of Ideas 1991-2015 and member of Foundation Studies Executive 2003-2008).

A wise mentor, an inspiring and modest leader, a steady guide, a selfless colleague, a kind and humorous friend: colleagues, past students, and the whole Trinity College community today remember the life of Diana Smith, who gave us so much.

Diana first came to Trinity in 1991 to teach Maths in the Foundation Studies Program (then Trinity Education Centre), caring for her students with the dedication that was the hallmark of her life. She soon became Director of Studies, inspiring staff with her wisdom and serene good humour. I recall many meetings at which Diana’s far-seeing vision penetrated murky confusion to find the vital point and a sure path forward. She was immensely dedicated, sorted out problems with an unerring wisdom, and offered her colleagues caring support and unruffled good humour. Trinity College Fellow Dr Denis White encapsulates her qualities as “an excellent eye for the main point, an absolute passion for teaching and a total commitment to putting the interests of the students first” (The University Dream. Creating Trinity Foundation Studies. Melbourne: Trinity College 2021).

From its fledging beginnings until her retirement as its Director in 2006, Diana fostered the development of the TCFS into a bustling intellectual community with many staff and thousands of students from more than 50 countries. In recognition for her contribution, she was elected a Fellow of the College in 2002 (later to become a Senior Fellow). Throughout these years she was a rock for those who relied on her. Although coping with long illness, Diana was always courageous and cheerful, more concerned for others than herself. With characteristic clarity of vision - and a mathematician to the last – in 2021 she tallied up the “good” and “bad” days she could expect from further treatment and chose instead to spend her last months peacefully. With her close friend and colleague from early days, Dr Tan Hooi Cheng, I visited her in June, and came away uplifted and reassured. Diana was so very much herself: serene, content, laughing, and keen to listen.

All who had the honour and pleasure to know and work with Diana will remember her with gratitude and the deepest affection. Our thoughts are with her loving family.

Diana's thanksgiving service will be held on Friday 30 July at St Stephen’s Anglican Church, Belmont (Geelong) from 2pm.
